"The Sound of Music" is a timeless favorite of many starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer and is considered one of the greatest movie musicals of all time. Originally on Broadway, this 1965 classic takes place in Austria during the 1930s and centers around a young woman, Maria who is failing at becoming a nun despite her best efforts. The convent receives a letter from Naval Captain Georg Von Trapp requesting if they had anyone who would be a suitable governess to his seven trouble-making children. Maria is given the job and finds out that the Captain's wife has passed away and he is often times away but still manages to run the household on a tight schedule.

The children are miserable and believe Maria is just another governess they can get to run off until they learn of her genuine kindness and care which brings the joy they need in their lives. As soon as Maria seems to be settling into her new way of things, she and the Captain begin to fall in love even though he is already engaged to a Baroness. Their romantic conflicts take a back seat due to world events when Germany attempts to take control of Austria and presenting the extremely possible outcome of the Captain finding himself drafted into the German Army and forced to fight against his own country.

This timeless film earned a total of ten Academy Award nominations including Best Actress in a Leading Role for Julie Andrews as Maria, Best Cinematography, Art Direction and Costume Design. It ended up winning five Oscars two of which were in top categories for Best Picture and Direction to Robert Wise.
